You’re at a backyard barbecue, with diesel pickups lined up in the driveway, and you overhear the following: "Hybrids can't tow." But if you're thinking about a 2026 Ford Maverick, that myth is easy to bust. That's because the Ford Maverick towing capacity is 2,000 lbs on every trim, and you can double it to 4,000 lbs with the available 4K Tow Package and all-wheel drive, hybrid or EcoBoost.
So the bigger question is, which build unlocks the full Ford Maverick towing capacity for your weekend adventures, and which engine you’ll like better the other five days of the week.
How Much Can a Ford Maverick Tow?
2,000 or 4,000 lbs is the short answer, depending on how you equip it. Here's how the 2026 Ford Maverick towing capacity breaks out by trim, per Ford:
XL, XLT, and Lariat: You get 2,000 lbs standard, or 4,000 lbs when you add the 4K Tow Package.
Lobo: You're capped at 2,000 lbs (no 4K Tow Package).
Tremor: You're capped at 2,000 lbs (no 4K Tow Package).
Your drivetrain decides which load number you get. You need AWD for the 4K Tow Package, so if you choose front-wheel drive, you'll stay at 2,000 lbs on any trim. You get AWD standard on the Lariat, though, and you can add it to the XL and XLT. (You can compare every trim and option on our 2026 Ford Maverick page.)
Ford also notes that your max towing varies with cargo, configuration, accessories, and how many passengers you're carrying; treat this rating as a ceiling you work down from.
The "Hybrids Can't Tow" Myth, Retired
Your backyard-barbecue myth had solid grounding at one point. From 2022 through 2024, if you wanted a Maverick hybrid, you got front-wheel drive only and a 2,000-lb cap. To get to 4,000, you had to choose the EcoBoost, AWD, and the 4K Tow Package together.
For the 2025 model year, Ford added AWD to the hybrid, and now you can pair the AWD hybrid with the 4K Tow Package. You get the same 4,000-lb rating as the gas engine.
So whoever told you the hybrid can't tow isn't wrong about the truck they remember; they're just a few model years behind.
Ford Maverick Hybrid vs. EcoBoost: Which One Tows Better for You?
Since you get 4,000 lbs either way, your Ford Maverick hybrid vs. EcoBoost decision comes down to how you drive the rest of the week. Here's how they compare, per Ford:
Choose the hybrid if:
You spend most of your miles commuting, and your trailer comes out on weekends.
You want the 4,000-lb rating and up to 40 MPG city with AWD.
You own a motorhome: Ford says you can flat-tow the hybrid (all four wheels down) behind a properly equipped RV, in FWD or AWD.
Choose the EcoBoost if:
You want stronger acceleration, with 250 hp and 280 lb-ft on tap.
You've got your eye on the Lobo or Tremor, and 2,000 lbs covers what you pull.
You'll find the Lobo and Tremor are the most eye-catching Mavericks in the lineup, but you can't get the 4K Tow Package on either. If your trailer weighs more than 2,000 lbs loaded, the Ford Maverick towing capacity you need lives on the XL, XLT, or Lariat. What the 4K Tow Package Adds
Per Ford, this package is what moves your 2026 Ford Maverick towing capacity from 2,000 to 4,000 lbs:
Class III trailer hitch with a 2" receiver
4-pin and 7-pin connectors
Trailer brake controller
Upgraded cooling fan
The trailer brake controller is the feature you'll appreciate most. It lets you run your trailer's electric brakes from the cab, so a heavier trailer slows down with you instead of shoving you from behind on a downhill stretch.
Payload and Tongue Weight: The Numbers You Can't Skip
Tow rating gets the attention, but payload is usually what you run out of first. Your payload covers everything your truck carries: you and your passengers, cargo in the bed, and the downward weight of your trailer on the hitch (tongue weight).
Ford rates your max payload at:
1,500 lbs: hybrid FWD and EcoBoost AWD
1,400 lbs: hybrid AWD
1,140 lbs: Tremor
1,045 lbs: Lobo
A common rule of thumb puts tongue weight at about 10 to 15 percent of your loaded trailer weight. Say you're pulling a 3,500-lb trailer with a hybrid AWD Maverick. That's roughly 350 to 525 lbs on your hitch, leaving you around 875 to 1,050 lbs for people and gear. You can fit two adults, two kids, and a cooler. A bed full of firewood might not make the cut. Always go by the weight sticker or VIN plate on your trailer, not the brochure number.
